communication project scoping pilot experiment mentorshipContact North BC is a pilot project funded by the British Columbia provincial government to provide local access to online education programming from British Columbia’s publicly funded colleges and universities, skills and training providers. Learners in communities in Northwest British Columbia can access their local online learning centre support services and their online programming without leaving their community. Students will also be offered academic and career supports to help further increase their successes. Services will include on-line on-demand tutoring, mentoring and work-integrated learning (such as real-world in class projects, paid internships, and paid work-experiences). We are opening 275 paid-work experiences this summer and fall for eligible students of Contact North BC / Coast Mountain College. Projects will be completed in about 80 hours over 2-8 weeks and each student is paid $1400 per project completed.
While deliverables will vary depending on the project scope, at the conclusion of the project you should have a completed report or other assets that you can use to further your business goals. Maintaining communication with students throughout the project will lead to better results.
Students are from a variety of programs and backgrounds. Many students are at early stages of their studies, so employers must be willing to provide guidance and mentorship throughout the duration of the program.
Project Examples
Submit a project here for our Level UP and Contact North coordinators to review. We encourage you to get specific in your project description about the skills you're looking for in order to attract the most suitable applicants.
Students are from a variety of programs and backgrounds. Common areas of study are:
- Social work, psychology, healthcare, and education
- International business, commerce, and general arts
- Indigenous studies
Here are some guidelines for you to follow:
- Level UP projects should be 80 hours worth of work.
- The project must be 100% remote.
- While Level UP is set up through Riipen’s Internship Program category, given the short, remote nature of Level UP, we require a project-based experience. While students will interact with you to complete the project, we want them to be able to understand the scope of the project by reading your project details. If you used a template, that’s a great starting point! Make sure to add as much context for your business needs as possible.
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Define the project scope up front to the best of your abilities, limiting scope changes once students are approved for the project.
Provide ongoing support and mentorship to students throughout the project. You must be comfortable working with students at early stages of their studies.
Review student applications and accept or decline applications within 30 days. (Recommended 14 days.)
Be available for a discussion with the Level UP coordinator or Contact North admin to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the internship.
Be responsive to communications from students and program administrators to make sure that student applications and projects proceed efficiently.
I understand that students will be applying to projects of their own autonomy, so having my project approved does not necessarily guarantee a matched student.
